«UGLY TEXT»
A collection of essays on unusual graffiti
Published by: Invalid Books and Street Art Research Institute.
Another book produced by the common efforts of Invalid Books and Street Art Research Institute was published at the end of April. This is «UGLY TEXT» — the first compilation of texts in Russian about “unusual” graffiti written by working street artists of various generations, assembled by by Konstantin Stavrov as an editor.
The book continues the series on the style of street art and graffiti that is defined as «ugly graffiti», «ugly style», «ignorant style», «anti style», etc. «UGLY TEXT» follows the previously released album «20 Years of НЁК!» by the «НЁК!» crew , who are the pioneers of ugly-graffiti in Russia. The book includes texts that represent the essence of such a controversial graffiti style and were written by artists who identify themselves with this genre.
«Although the anti-style graffiti has been around for about 20 years, it seems like its history has never been written down. There aren’t many publications and analytical texts around — this is probably because the anti-style is a subculture within a subculture, so only the participants of this sub-subculture would be able to write its true history.»Anton Polsky (MAKE)
